and her new book 

Globalizing Feminisms 1789-1945

Including key pieces on the history of feminism from an international group of scholars, this 
book charts feminists' attempts to restore a balance of power between the sexes against a 
backdrop of huge cultural, social and political transitions across the world.

 This book event is free and open to all and light refreshments will be served. The book will be available for 
purchase at the event. 


Karen Offen (Ph.D Stanford 1971) has been affiliated with the Institute since 1977. The 
recipient of many fellowships and grants, including Rockefeller, Guggenheim, and NEH, she 
holds an honorary doctorate in humane letters from her undergraduate alma mater, the 
University of Idaho and was recognized by her alumni association with the Silver and Gold 
award for distinguished achievement. She is also listed in a number of Who's Who volumes.

"The Evolution of an Art Form: the French Chocolatière"

on Sunday, March 21, at 10 AM

San Francisco

This talk examines the art and history of French chocolatières, originally
used for serving the beverage hot chocolate, and their distinguishing
characteristics. It discusses ceramic and metal vessels, primarily Sèvres
porcelain and silver or silver-gilt, as well as works of art which depict
the drinking of hot chocolate and show the cultural context of the use of
the chocolatière.


Doors will open at 9:30 A.M.
SFCC lectures are complimentary for Museum visitors

   Cathy's book is about contemporary American Indians, and it is scheduled to be published in the fall by the University of Nebraska Press. She is interested in comments, because
 "I am sure I'll be doing some revisions."

From San Francisco and Marin, take Interstate 580 to the Harrison/Oakland Avenue exit. Turn left onto Oakland Avenue which will take you under the freeway to a light; then turn left immediately onto MacArthur Blvd.

 

 From the south bay, Interstate 580 to the MacArthur/Harrison exit and continue across Harrison Street onto Macarthur Blvd.

 

Once you are on MacArther Blvd, look for Howe Street about two lights further on; turn right onto Howe and go past the Kaiser Hospital buildings to 3857 on your left.

The entrance is up the stairs at number 2.

 

Parking is likely to be OK on the street, but if not, people can park in the CVS Pharmacy parking lot off Howe and 40th Street, a short distance further on your right.

Since it's on a Sunday, parking is free!
